Month by Month
January
- 11th - Principal photography begins on The 39 Steps, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.[1]
- 23rd - The Institute of Amateur Cinematographers award a gold medal of merit to Hitchcock at luncheon at the Savoy for the "finest film of the year made in Britain", The Man Who Knew Too Much.[2]
February
- 14th - Michael Balcon departs from Southampton aboard the Olympic, bound for New York and Hollywood. Whilst in America, he plans to promote Gaumont-British and to sign deals to distribute the company's films. He also meets with Will H. Hays and Joseph L. Breen of the Production Code Administration and later states, "If we in England want distribution in this market [America], it is entirely logical that we should be prepared to observe the code principles."[3]
March
- Several British newspapers and trade publications announce that Hitchcock's next project will be London Symphony, starring Clive Brook and based on an original story by Sir Philip Gibbs and his son, Anthony.[4]
- Studio-based filming on the The 39 Steps is completed. A second unit team headed by Penrose Tennyson is then dispatched to Scotland to film location footage at the Forth Bridge and at Glen Coe.[5]
April
- 8th - In Hollywood, Michael Balcon announces that he has signed deals to sell 13 Gaumont-British films in America, as well as agreeing a reciprocal contract player loan scheme with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.[6]
- Post production on The 39 Steps is completed.[5]
May
- The first issue of The Cine-Technician, the journal of the Association of Cine-Technicians, is published. It includes a lead article by Hitchcock — "Alfred Hitchcock Says 'Acquire a Real Knowledge of Cinema Technique'".

July
August
- 6th - The Yorkshire Post reports that Hitchcock will be one of the speakers at fortnight-long film summer school in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, organised by the Educational Handwork Association. Other speakers include British documentary film maker Mary Field and the theme of the event is to explore the use of film within education.[7][8]
September
- 20th - Barbara J. Buchanan's article "Alfred Hitchcock Tells a Woman that Women Are a Nuisance" is published in Film Weekly. She begins by asking the director, "Why do you hate women?"[9]
October
November
- 9th - Although the script for Sabotage is still under development, Hitchcock sends a second unit out to capture footage of the Lord Mayor's procession to the Law Courts for use in the film.[10]
