Cary's star will shine forever
It was good to read how Hollywood screen legend Cary Grant has beaten David Beckham to claim the title of greatest ever male style icon (July 9), even though he died 22 years ago.
I am sure the reason why the North by Northwest star was a hard act to follow is because he was a real ladies' man and Hollywood's most fascinating and timeless star.
Bristol-born Cary Grant (Archibald Leach) remains forever young, an icon of quick wit, romantic charm and urbane sophistication, the epitome of male physical perfection, working with the most talented directors.
Cary Grant starred in an astonishing 73 films, ranging from his ground-breaking comedic roles in such classics as Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story to the darker, unforgettable characters of Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion and notorious North by Northwest, which in my opinion was Grant's best film.
In the universe of the imagination, as long as there are movies and audiences who seek to find in them the reflection of their highest hopes and their deepest dreams, Cary Grant's star will indeed shine forever, offering the illusion of the pleasure of his company as it guides us along the most difficult journey of all: the one into ourselves.
Yes, Cary Grant is a worthy winner and I'm sure for millions of people, and the people of Bristol, we will salute him for all the memories.
