Charles Bennett, screenwriter

Screenwriter Charles Bennett, whose collaboration with movie director Alfred Hitchcock breathed suspense into classics such as The 39 Steps and The Man Who Knew Too Much, has died.

Mr. Bennett, 95, died Thursday in hospital.

He was born Aug. 2, 1899, in Shoreham-by-Sea, England, and was a child actor before serving in World War I. After the war, he began writing.

Among his first efforts was Blackmail (1929), which also marked the beginning of Mr. Bennett's working relationship with Hitchcock. The collaboration ended in 1940 with Foreign Correspondent.

Mr. Bennett recently was awarded the Screen Laurel award for lifetime achievement from the Writers Guild of America.
