The Mercury Theater on the Air
The Mercury Theater on the Air was a radio series of live radio dramas created by Orson Welles and broadcast during 1938. The weekly hour-long show presented classic literary works performed by Welles's celebrated Mercury Theatre repertory company, with music composed or arranged by Bernard Herrmann.
After front-page headlines generated by the infamous "The War of the Worlds" broadcast, Campbell's Soup signed on as the sponsor and the series became The Campbell Playhouse in December 1938.
