Shoe Lane, London

Shoe Lane has been associated with the British publishing industry since around 1500 when William Caxton's apprentice, Wynkyn de Worde, set up a printing shop in the area. Until the 1980s, most of the British national newspapers were based in nearby Fleet Street.

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927)

After the Avenger murder at the start of the film, we see the process of the story being reported and printed in the latest edition of the Evening Standard newspaper.

Hitchcock included footage of the Evening Standard printing presses, situated at 47 Shoe Lane, along with the company's delivery vans. The director made the first of his famous cameo appearances as an editor, although he sits with his back to camera. He later claimed that the only reason he appeared at all was due to a lack of extras.

The headquarters of the Evening Standard is now Northcliffe House, 2 Derry Street.
