Lux Radio Theater

The Lux Radio Theater began by broadcasting adaptations of Broadway stage plays before later including film adaptations. The series ran from October 1934 until June 1955.

Cecil B. DeMille took over as the host of the series in June 1936, continuing until January 1945.

The series was also broadcast by the Armed Forces Radio Service from April 1952 under the series title Hollywood Radio Theatre.

Mercury Theatre on the Air — which made Orson Welles a household name after his infamous adaptation of War of the Worlds in October 1938 — was initially a summer replacement series for Lux Radio Theater.
