SS Leviathan
(Redirected from Leviathan)
The SS Leviathan was an ocean liner which regularly crossed the North Atlantic from 1911 to 1934, carrying over 250,000 passengers.
Originally built for Germany's Hamburg America Line and named the Vaterland, she was seized by the U.S. government in 1917 and renamed Leviathan, becoming the flagship of the United States Lines.
The liner had a couple of links to Alfred Hitchcock:
- After filming The Pleasure Garden (1925) in Europe, American actress Carmelita Geraghty returned to America aboard theLeviathan, which departed Southampton on 25/Aug/1925 and arrived into New York on 31/Aug/1925. She was accompanied on the journey by her father, screenwriter Thomas Geraghty.
- Prior to Hitchcock's move to America, it was widely reported that his first film for David O. Selznick would be a drama about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. According to several sources, Selznick planned to purchase the the Leviathan and then sink it for real.
