Hitchcock's Films
The Pleasure Garden (1925)
According to Hitchcock, scenes of a departing ship were filmed at the docks in Genoa.
En route from Munich, Italian customs officers at the Brenner Pass had confiscated the crew's undeclared film stock and Hitchcock had to source replacement stock to film in Genoa.
With Alma Reville travelling separately with American actresses Virginia Valli and Carmelita Geraghty, Hitchcock had travelled to Genoa with Miles Mander, Elizabeth Pappritz, cameraman Gaetano di Ventimiglia and a newsreel cameraman. The small group stayed at the Hotel Bristol Palace.
Hitchcock managed to persuade a ship's captain to allow one cameraman to film the departure from onboard the ship, and then be allowed to disembark at the edge of the harbour, whilst the other filmed the departing ship from the dockside.[1]
With filming completed, cast and crew travelled on to Alassio.
