Fort Point, Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California
Fort Point is a masonry seacoast fortification located at the southern side of the Golden Gate at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. This fort was completed just before the American Civil War by the United States Army, to defend San Francisco Bay against hostile warships. The fort is now protected as Fort Point National Historic Site, a United States National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service as a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Hitchcock's Films
Vertigo (1958)
Vertigo location filming at Fort Point took place on the afternoon of Friday 4th October, 1957. Contrary to popular myth, Kim Novak didn't jump into the icy cold waters of the bay and the "suicide" sequence was performed by stunt double Polly Burson who jumped off the edge and onto a outstretched parachute suspended above the water. The shots of James Stewart rescuing Novak from the water were filmed later in a studio tank at Paramount and only required four takes.[1][2]
