Abstract
Review of "Hitchcock's Music" - by Jack Sullivan
Sullivan leaves no stone unturned (though his book needs a glossary explaining musical terms to the film buff and filmic terms, not to mention plot summaries, to the more musical reader). Narrative Film Music (Indiana University Press, 1987) to telling effect: "Hitchcock's examples point to the power of this music which blissfully lacks awareness or empathy; its very emotionlessness, juxtaposed with ensuing human catastrophe, is what provokes our emotional response" (200).
