Forth Bridge celebrates centenary

The Famous Firth of Forth Rail Bridge is 100 years old this year.

Scotland's celebrations opened with the re-creation of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, hammering in the last of seven million rivets on March 4, 1890, and end Oct. 7 with a $500,000 spectacular featuring fireworks, lasers, classical music and a liner.

The 2.5 km bridge, linking Edinburgh with the Highlands and northern towns, carries the railway 157 feet above the river — as seen in Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, where the hero climbs out of the train on to the bridge.

Centennial events include art exhibitions, sporting contests on land and water, a jazz festival, and special train excursions across the bridge from Edinburgh's Waverley Station.
