A Young Film Director

Mr Alfred Hitchcock, the director of "Blackmail," "The Ring," "The Farmer's Wife," and "Easy Virtue," has had the sort of career that other film directors like to portray on the screen—that of the male Cinderella or the Dick Whittington type. At 15 he was earning 15s a week. Now at 29, as one of the best British film-producers, he is making an income that leaves the salary of a Cabinet Minister far behind. At one time his films revealed many impressionistic ideas from the German film studios, but latterly his pictures have been more conventional, with excellent character studies. "The Farmer's Wife" is claimed to be superior to a great many foreign productions. "Blackmail" is expected to make at least £250,000.
