Arthur La Bern
Biography
Born in London, to French parents, Arthur La Bern worked as a journalist for several British newspapers and was a Pacific war correspondent for the Evening Standard during the Second World War.
His interest in crime led him to write several non-fiction books about famous British murderers — including George Joseph Smith and John George Haigh — as well as several works of crime fiction.
La Bern's 1966 novel Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square was adapted by Alfred Hitchcock and Anthony Shaffer into the 1972 film Frenzy. However, the author was less than satisfied with the adaptation:
The result on the screen is appalling [...] I would like to ask Mr Hitchcock and Mr Shaffer what happened between book and script to the authentic London characters I created.
